So I went to the dentist the other day. One of my wisdom teeth were bothering me last week. It was bleeding like a mofo and the inside of my cheek was a little bit irritated. This week it is fine. The same happened to two other wisdom teeth a couple years back.
Of course, the dentist was gung-ho about yanking them out.
So I'm considering getting them yanked. At this point I'm more against the proposition than for it. I figure if I get them yanked now, I can't put them back in 5 years from now. But if they start bothering me 5 years from now, I still have the opportunity to yank them.
I've heard as many horror stories with teeth being removed as I've heard about keeping them in.
Thoughts? Experiences? _________________ "I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day. When he said, 'Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?' Grandpa said no. But I served in a company of heroes." -- Major Richard D. Winters (ret) |

nice thread parv. i got the same run around at the dentist last week, except mine aren't even bothering me! they were all like, there's no room. you won't be able to keep them clean. pull em out, pull em out! and i'm all like, yo, these teeth are just minding their own damn business.
i am fairly anti-pull myself, but they keep telling me that i'm going to have problems down the road, and by then they'll have attached themselves more firmly.
but with the horror stories, and my distaste for anasthesia (which i've never had before), i am much in the same boat as you. i would like to hear what people have to say as well. |

| ps. you probably have some nasty gingivitis from not being able to keep em clean. get some listerine and a really small tooth brush so you can brush way back there. |

Yeah, well new wisdom teeth are always uncomfortable when they're coming in. If they're already grown and still hurting you should probably get them pulled.
My dentist said mine were coming in too tight and I might want to get them pulled, but I think it's just a standard line so that they can make more money (maybe commission from the surgeon?). My teeth came in fine of course, because I have near perfect teeth.
I decided to get them pulled afterwards anyway. It's not like you use them, and they were a real hassle because they were hard to brush (and I've got kind of a bad gag reflex) and stuff kept getting stuck in them. Nearly impossible for me to floss them.
In the end the surgeon dude really fucked up on one tooth. Also I passed out when I got home because of too much drugs and maybe blood loss. I've also got a chip out of another tooth. I think the surgeon must have been on the same drugs as me at the time.
When I went back the next day because the jackass had missed half a tooth he just sat me down right there and pulled the rest of it with a pair of plyers. Fuck dude!! Do you have any fucking idea how sensitive my mouth was after having surgery performed on it less than 24 hours early!! Fucknut!
But I'd still recommend getting them pulled, just go to a different fucker than who I went to. Also, I still have little indents in my mouth where the teeth use to be, but it's all good because they're just indents so things don't get stuck in them. They were decent sized holes for the first few months though and you have to keep them cleaned out. |

I'm torn on this issue. Mine were pretty badly impacted so they had to come out.
I ended up getting vertigo from it (ya, SOUNDS really cool). During the drilling/yanking/whatever the fuck they do, the doctor [the other doctor I had to go see after I got sick from the 'operation'] said something had happened (doctor speak: "head trauma"), and a piece of my inner ear broke off. Vertigo is extreme diziness and lack of balance, and I was on the floor for a damn long time, and would vomit if I got up. I'll spare you any further details. Basically, it sucked really badly.
However, vertigo aside, you do get some sweet assed prescription drugs!!!
And seriously, anasthesia is really cool. It's a very cool feeling.. especially if you get a nice hot nurse who gives you the good painkiller... what's that happy juice called? I can't remember, but it's the good stuff that makes you happy and not care about world politics.
And plus my doctor was really hot.
So that's 3 good points to 1 bad one. _________________ "You'll never get to heaven if you're scared of getting hot." |

Get them pulled. My understanding of why they push for it, is because it is preventative (think vaccinations). You just want to make sure that nothing gets messed up in the process, SO:
If you trust your dentist, make sure you get the name of a really good oral surgeon. The dude I had was great. Sat me down about a month before the operation, went over what was going to happen... any risks involved of hitting other stuff while he was in there. Asked me if I wanted to be knocked out during it, etc.
No bad side-effects, aside from chipmunk cheeks for 7 days afterwards. And now flossing takes me 1.4 seconds less than it used to _________________ "Thus, in order to keep our freedom, it would have been better to remain attached to the belief in gods rather than being slaves to the fate of physicists" - Epicurus |

I'm wrassling with this issue as well. Although it seems that I actually have teeth getting pushed out of alignment because of these suckers. (?)
Perhaps Australia has a different opinion on this subject matter? You there, Australia? _________________ nascar is "wrestling on wheels" |

Well, as for me, I think it depends on what the teeth are doing. In my case, I went through 4 years of braces and lots of $$$, and my wisdom teeth were impacted. Basically, they were aimed like a battering ram at my back teeth, so it would have totally screwed my ortho if I left them in.
I had my dentist take them out. He was excellent! He told me everything to expect. I took some awesome pills just before my mom drove me to the office. By the time I got there, I was sliding down the walls. They put me in the chair, and I started cracking jokes to the assistant (who may have been hot, but I was too wacked out to remember). Anyway, he froze up my mouth, and then I fell asleep. I woke up once when he was really yanking on one tooth, but that's it.
It was not painful during, but it was pretty sore after. One tooth in particular he had to crack into 3 pieces to get it out. That side was pretty sore for about 2 days. I took the week off work, and was fine after that. I'm really happy I had it done! If you want, I can give you my dentists name and you can see if he'll do it for you.
Also, my mom got me an electric toothbrush for xmas. It does an excellent job getting behind my back teeth. I'd recommend it. All the dentists in her office use the same one. It's kind of expensive though...
I'll ask my momma what she thinks the reasons should be for getting teeth pulled. _________________ Marsellus : I'm prepared to scour the the Earth for that motherfucker. If Butch goes to Indochina, I want a nigger waiting in a bowl of rice ready to pop a cap in his ass. |

i think the only way i would get it done is if i could do it the same day as someone else--then my miserable ass could have some company. i can't do it before the summer anyway, gotta finish my masters first, or at the very least, finish the semester since i'm funded right now. but parv, if you get it done in the summer, maybe we can get the 2 for 1 deal. bitch says you can stay at our place and he'll take care of us.
that is, if i can get over my intense fear of this whole procedure, as well as my intense fear of being sedated. |

It is a good idea to have someone around. I woke up in bed, and my mouth was filled with gause that I spit out. I was glad my mom was there to help, cause I had no idea what the hell was going on!

Dude, the sedation pill I had before going was the best!! I'm serious, I want to do it again!! Hmm...anyone know a doctor who can get under the table prescriptions _________________ Marsellus : I'm prepared to scour the the Earth for that motherfucker. not really dood. I can't remember if I was getting teeth pushed out of the way... (apparently there's 2.. or more... types of impacting.. wait... there's 5) but the instigator of me getting the consultation was painful jaw aches... like, we're talking nasty dudes. So they stew in there until you finally have a problem.... which is a bad time to get them out. Say, for example, for some reason you don't have medical insurance, or... who knows.
I agree with Rugged that it's preventative...
ooo, and I like wrassling. _________________ "You'll never get to heaven if you're scared of getting hot." |

Valium. Just remembered it's valium. A nice cool nurse will give you a smidgen of valium before the anasthesia... mmmm, nice nurse. _________________ "You'll never get to heaven if you're scared of getting hot." |

Damnit... You guys have jinxed me. I haven't been here for a week now, and in the last 3 days, I have had this ache in the back of my mouth. Its on the inside of my gum at the back, you know, just behind that last tooth.
Is this my wisdom teeth? Maybe not, because I don't feel any smarter....lol..
anyway.. Yeah, everyone seems to get them pulled. I don't want to, but maybe I should be cause I have just had braces a few years ago, and my teeth are nice and straight.
hhmm.. But yeah, pulling is always encouraged.
on the other hand, I had to fight them to get my tonsils out. apparently they avoid doing that now. _________________ Insert Picture of Skyline Here. |

Okay, so in light of recent events, I've decided to resurrect the wisdom teeth thread. If you want to know what sparked this, the short story is I had a shitty consultation with an oral surgeon today. (If you want the long version, click: http://www.buffmuthers.com/~midge/)
SO...does anyone from around here actually know someone good I could get a consultation with? And also, do any of you hoes wanna get it done at the same time as me? I still think my misery would loooove some company! ...That is if I can recover what little will I had mustered up to actually get this done...
Fucking teeth. If they're so bad for you, why do they grow there in the first place??? FRIG! |

what a wanker.
Don't worry, it isn't that bad, you'll be a little sore for a few days but you'll get over it pretty quickly.
Find someone else too, someone a little nicer. _________________ Insert Picture of Skyline Here. |

My doc in K-town was AWESOME! Valium and everything!!!! Wouldn't be a bad drive from vernon, but I suppose this isn't something you want to do at christmas, and would be a bit of a drive from van. but whatever, if you wants his dets, let me know.
seriously, he's awesome, his staff were awesome, and PLUS he's good looking, it's like the whole package.

I never did get my wisdom teeth yanked. There doing perfectly fine now. One of them is somewhat crooked. But I don't care, it's not pushing on any of my other teeth. Not getting them yanked was probably a good decision for myself. _________________ "I cherish the memories of a question my grandson asked me the other day. but carlos, i don't want to take drugs! i'm considering the general anasthetic a bit more now, but it still freaks the hell outta me!
parv- but haven't they given you the whole run around about how much misery they'll cause you when you get older? mine aren't bothering me at all, never have, but it's supposed to be a whole preventative thing. are you totally not going to do it at all now? |
